♦ Ben UFO (Hessle Audio, UK)
As one of the co-founders of Hessle Audio, Ben UFO has been responsible, alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea, for some of the most varied and ground breaking releases of recent years. Having become immersed in the still emerging dubstep scenes in London and Leeds in 2005, his musical taste was shaped primarily by the DMZ and Sub Dub nights taking place in those cities. However, as tastes have shifted and scenes have fragmented, Ben UFO's approach to the music and to Hessle Audio itself has developed.
This is not to say that his focus is primarily on the sounds of the old school, as Ben UFO is looked to as one of the leading figures supporting up and coming producers. He was the first DJ to play material by producers such as Blawan and Joy Orbison, both now scene figureheads, and his biweekly slot on London's leading ex-pirate radio station, RinseFM, is considered to be one of the only places to hear the most exclusive new music by both new and established producers.
♦ Pangaea (Hessle Audio, UK)
Pangaea is the sole alias of UK producer and DJ Kevin McAuley. Since 2007 McAuley has represented one third of Hessle Audio, the imprint he began along with friends Ben "UFO" Thomson and David "Pearson Sound" Kennedy while the trio were studying at the University of Leeds. As we're sure you're aware, Hessle Audio has since come to be known as one of UK club music's most consistently brilliant independent labels, while McAuley's rise as a producer has dovetailed that of the label.
Again much like the label itself, McAuley has only offered his music slowly and steadily, maintaining an impeccably high standard that's ranged from contemporary garage (You & I / Router) to bassline tearouts (Hex / Fatalist). His latest transmission is Release, his most expansive body of work to date. Its eight tracks find McAuley dipping into his established pool of influences—garage swing, experimental flourishes, drum & bass functionality—while pushing deeper into the techno territory that's proving so fertile for UK artists right now.
♦ Pearson Sound (Hessle Audio, UK)
As one third of the team behind the Hessle Audio label, David Kennedy’s Pearson Sound moniker has become synonymous with cutting edge UK dancefloor music. Having stripped back his release schedule , somewhat defiantly hitting out with just a couple of self-released singles that hinted at a more vivid approach to his production this year, he’s truly taken his DJing global with his performances reaching as far afield as Asia, South America and Australia.
Having lectured at the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid, released a critically heralded FABRICLIVE compilation and remixed artists like Radiohead, The xx and M.I.A., Kennedy’s also found the time to run the vinyl only club night, Acetate, in Leeds and help ensure that Hessle Audio’s weekly radio show on London’s Rinse FM maintains its role as an essential part of the station’s broadcasting schedule.
♦ Chevel (Vae Victis Music, IT)
Dario Tronchin, better known as Chevel or Monday Night, is emerging quickly in the electronic music scene. After graduating at SAE institute in Berlin, Dario began to work on his own aesthetics and launched Enklav records, his first platform to promote his very own music vision. On Enklav he released several EPs and a full-lenght album, Apply Within, which has been strongly supported both by the press and international artists. After launching Enklav, Dario released an epic techno EP on the spanish label NON Series which has soon become a best seller.
In the meantime, Dario got closer with the italian label Vae Victis and there, he released another EP, “A Loveable Inciter”, which has been highly supported by artists such as Ben UFO, Pearson Sound, Joy Orbison, Happa, Steffi and many more. Notwithstanding working in a techno and experimental contest, Dario has been able to explore different kinds of musical aesthetics, as testified by the great success of his Monday Night series; a series of abstract deep house tunes which gained great support from artists such as Madteo, Steffi, Nina Kraviz, Mosca and many others.
♦ Peter Van Hoesen (Time To Express, BE)
When it comes down to combining the best of many musical worlds, Peter Van Hoesen can say he's been doing it for a while now. Deeply rooted in the Brussels electronic music scene as DJ and producer since 1993, he's considered by many as a man with multiple musical talents: from straight-up dancefloor jackin' techno to advanced abstract electronica.
His tracks and remixes have been released on his own labels Time To Express and Foton as well as through Meakusma, Ostgut Ton, CLR, Hotflush, Exone, Token, Komisch, Lan Muzic, Curle and many more. He's active as a DJ, producer, sound designer and composer for contemporary dance and theatre. Peter currently lives in Berlin.
