Biografie
Bringing bold new tendencies to a world of avant garde classicism, popular song and contemporary electronic minimalism, the Berlin-based Emika has, since the turn of the decade, transposed perceived notions of music on its head. Of-late, her patrician approach to the time-honored sounds of orchestral music has caught up with the evolution of her bassy, trip hop and melancholic pop style, underpinned by the glitched, steeping design of her academic yet abstract production techniques.
Having signed to Ninja Tune for her first two albums, Emika (2011) and Dva (2013), she established her own, eponymous label in 2015 which in a single year released both her Drei and Klavírní long players. With her fifth studio album, Melanfonie, Emika's first symphony, the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign that allowed her to work with the City Of Prague's 50-piece Metropolitan Orchestra, she is once again breaking new ground for singer-songwriters, producers and performers alike, crossing over into the world of new classical music.
Studying sound design at university, she soaked up the sounds of Bristol's burgeoning
dubstep-era bass culture before migrating to Berlin and immersing herself in the world of
techno. Spending four years as a sound designer at Native Instruments' headquarters in the
city, she set up about establishing herself as an independent artist with her own sound.
Her current live performance, furthermore, has seen Emika reconceptualise the way she takes to the stage. Embarking on a new hybrid approach to song and sound manipulation, Emika now presents a new live show with drummer Ran Levari. Exploiting new technologies in live vocal looping, sample triggering, sequential synthesis and live drums, it's an advanced vision that is uniquely her own. She has toured her various albums across the world – performing throughout the UK, Europe, Russia, China, America and Mexico, including a full orchestra performance of Melanfonie in Hungary at the Pécs Festival Of Light (2017).
Emika has worked on many collaborative projects as a singer and song writer, aside from her resolutely personal solo material - including alongside Amon Tobin, Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble, Marcel Dettmann, Pinch and MyMy. She was responsible for creating the concept and gathering field recordings of the sounds of Berghain for their Fünf compilation and created a track for the collection herself. Public Enemy producer Hand Shocklee was her mentor while she created her second album Dva.
Her music has been used at the London 2012 Olympics, in adverts by Gucci and McLaren, and
by NBC - whose use of her Chris Isaak Wicked Game cover saw the track rocket to iTunes' No.
1 in Canada and No. 2 in the US. She was also sampled by The Weeknd on his track Professional and increasingly contributes music to film and tv soundtracks - including a trailer for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and ABC's How To Get Away With Murder.
Emika's fifth full-length album Falling In Love With Sadness, co-produced with Robert Witschakowski of The Exaltics, will be out on Emika Records on World Mental Health Day the 10th of October 2018. A portion of proceeds will go to a UK-based mental health charity.
