Tiësto's career is punctuated by landmark achievements – the first DJ in the world to sell out a solo stadium event for over 25,000 people 2 nights in a row, he scored a number one hit with his single Traffic, the first instrumental track to reach the top spot in his homeland of Holland in 23 years. His remix of Delerium featuring Sarah McLachlan's Silence was the first house track ever broadcast on daytime radio in North America, (it became an international dancefloor anthem and also spent eight weeks in the UK top 10 chart). He played live in front of billions of people during the Parade Of The Athletes at the official opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens. But despite his meteoric success, Tiësto remains grounded about his achievements and clearly loves making and playing music above the accolades it brings.

Born in Holland, Tiësto became a DJ because he 'liked to share music with other people. When I was younger, I'd listen to a radio show called the Soul Show, and to Ben Liebrand's mix show, where he would remix and cut up different tracks, and I just thought - I wanna do this!' Starting out with a mobile show around the country, he progressed to student parties, and then to three nights a week in a club, learning and perfecting his craft. 'music was always my first love but back then I didn't know it was possible to make a living out of being a DJ... If I wasn't a DJ now though I'd be a chef. I love cooking – it must be because of the mixing element!' The productions came later, in 1995. 'I really wanted to produce music that I could play in my sets, because it brings much more fulfilment to the process. I bought some samplers, some computer programs, and just started working on it.' He makes it sound easy – indeed, he makes it look easy as 10 years down the line his productions consistently bother the charts and frequently reach number one around Europe.

In 1997 Tiësto, along with Arny Bink, formed Black Hole Recordings, the label that launched the hugely acclaimed Magik. In Search Of Sunrise, and Nyana mix compilations. The label grew to such proportions that in 2001 Tiësto started a sub-label, Magik Muzik. 'It's the home of records of mine, or of people whose work I really believe in,' he enthuses. 'Everything on Magik Muzik is what you'll find in my sets, which makes it more of my own little project.' Some of the gems from Magik Muzik include 2001 anthem Flight 643 and his artist albums In My Memory and Just Be.

Though known primarily for his pioneering contributions to the trance scene, Tiësto's style is now a mix of everything: 'trance, house, techno - it's the best of all that the dance world has to offer. In 1998, I was really a trance DJ, but now I've travelled round the world so much, different influences have seeped in and I play a bit of everything. I think the only way forward for DJs now is to play a diverse mix of sounds.' Indeed, his brand of trance was always pushing at the constraints of the genre anyway, featuring soaring vocals from the likes of Sarah McLachlan and Kirsty Hawkshaw, spine-tingling breakdowns, and euphoric melodies at every end of the spectrum. His productions, sets, and releases range from peak time club heaven to the sort of perfect chill out that could reduce a grown man to tears, and have at times owed as much influence to classical music as to dance.

The many high profile gigs and shows have now taken Tiësto away from exclusively playing clubs, and propelled him to become more of a mainstream artist. 'Often at my shows now, half of the people are die-hard clubbers, but the other half are people who know me from the radio, or from more mainstream gigs,' he says. 'It's more like they're going to a concert, so now I get a great mix of both worlds.'

Describing the last few years as 'a journey of defining moments,' (as well as the usual club successes, his shelves are groaning under the weight of numerous awards – TMF-Awards, MTV, Dutch DJ - and gold discs...) his favourites include the second night of the Tiësto In Concert show in Holland in 2004: 'I was really aware of what was going on, the music was just right – a mix of all my big tunes and new tunes, everything just felt perfect that night. I played for nine hours straight, and it was my favourite gig ever.' And, of course, being voted by the readers as the number one DJ in the world for the third time. 'The first time it happened it was so amazing, I was overjoyed. The second and the third time were great as well of course, but the first time you're on the cover of that magazine that is so respected by other DJs – it's like winning an Oscar!'

In May 2006 Tiësto decided to become the worldwide ambassador for Dance4Life, and to invest considerate amounts of his time and efforts to the one charity in which he could really find himself. Immediately the production of a Dance4Life anthem was discussed, which resulted in an a song with Faithless' Maxi Jazz, where Maxi's words and Tiësto's music perfectly intertwine into a dynamic piece which could not better suite the Dance4Life vision.

Continuing to explore fresh avenues, Tiësto is currently experimenting with new sounds in the studio, and writing more vocals himself. 'I'm not looking for any big collaborations right now, I'm more interested in a burgeoning talent – someone whose voice is good, and that really touches you. A voice should sound like an instrument to me. I've had a spell away from the studio, relaxing and travelling, but now I'm really enthused about getting back in there. I'm more open to doing remixes again. I like to hear a track and right away know what I want to do with it, what I can make different, and whether it'll work for me in my sets – all my remixes have to be tried and tested.'

The future for Tiësto promises yet further success, both as the solo artist he's become and the DJ we know him to be. 'Another album, more remixes, definitely,' he agrees, 'but it's hard to look too far into the future. Every couple of months it seems that something new, unexpected and exciting is happening!'

Vrijdag 16 maart

Elements of Life album reaches gold status in Holland
Last week, Tiësto's new Elements of Life album, has already reached the status of gold in the Netherlands. This means that already 40.000 copies of the follow up to Just Be have been sold on the day of it's release last Friday!

The same day Tiësto's new radio show kicked off on Dutch number one national radio station Radio 538. The first hour of this unique first edition of Club Nouveau by Tiësto can be downloaded as podcast through www.radio538.nl

Elements of Life hits Belfast
After kicking of at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Saturday the 31st of March 2007 Kings Hall in Belfast was the setting of Tiësto's first big Elements of Life World Tour show.

At this sold out event 8000 people experienced amazing high definition visuals combined with fireworks and a massive lightshow which made this first big Elements of Life event a not-to-miss experience!

This spectacular show started with a guest performance by JES, followed by a special warm-up set by a virtual Tiësto on a massive 20 by 12 meter backdrop.

During a five hours set Tiësto took the crowd on a journey through the Elements of Life: Earth, Water, Wind and Fire. All Elements had their own special intro and visuals and during the show there were special guest-performances. Julie Thompson joined Tiësto on stage to perform the Elements of Life album track 'Do You Feel Me' and Tiësto featuring Christian Burns performing their new single 'In The Dark'

Tiësto winner at 3FM Awards
Last night, Paradiso in Amsterdam was the setting for the annual Dutch 3FM Awards. The well respected radio station created a short list with Dutch artists on which the listeners could vote. For the third time in a row Tiësto has been voted as Best Artist in the category Dance.

One Tiësto Elements of Life Show Scheduled for Gelredome
In contradiction to prior announcements, Tiësto will perform only once at the Dutch Gelredome for his Elements of Life show instead of the three concerts.

This past month in March, Tiësto launched his Elements of Life world tour with a unique and successful event at Amsterdam Schiphol airport in support of his aptly named artist album. As part of the world tour there will be a Netherlands date, specifically at the Gelredome in Arnhem on Saturday June 2nd.

Earlier it was announced that in addition to the show on Saturday June 2nd, there would also be two performances scheduled on Thursday May 31st and Friday June 1st. The last few weeks have indicated that Thursday is difficult day to schedule a show, which would last until 6 am. A few companies have indicated that they were interested in partnering on the event but our experience is that this would affect the atmosphere which is supposed to be created by the Elements of Life show. Due to this reason, management has decided to present the Elements of Life show as an exclusive one off event for the real fans on Saturday June 2nd.

Tickets that have already been purchased for both the Thursday May 31st and the Friday June 1st shows are valid for the show on Saturday June 2nd. Restitution may be done until June 1st by filling out the restitution form available for download at http://www.ticketbox.nl/restitutie.pdf. All tickets which are received after June 1st, will not be refunded.

Tiësto @ Coachella & North American Tour Dates Announced
Taking to the main stage at Coachella '07 with a crowd of over 30,000 in the audience to close out Saturday's schedule following the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tiësto played an epic set that encompassed only his productions. Thinking of the 'Elements of Life' show as more of a concert, the Holland born DJ knew it had to be something incredible, and that it was. Both pleasing his fans, and opening the door of new experience for the entire Coachella audience, Tiësto was on point musically, and the stunning stage backdrop synched the audio event with the theme of the album. Large screens and LED curtains provided the visual aspect with captivating images of fire, water, air and earth, each essential element intertwined with the human form. At the end of the performance, the entire audience that reached far back onto the polo grounds, paid homage to Tiësto, with hands in the air, chanting his name.

Since its release on Ultra Records on April 10th, Tiësto's third artist album, 'Elements of Life', has been on the charts. Opening at #1 on Billboard's Electronic Album chart on week of release, it remains firmly in the same spot, and hit #71 for its debut on the Top 200, and is currently at #9 in the Top Independent Album category. In addition, Elements of Life also posted another huge success for dance music in Billboard, ranking at #8 for the most digital albums sold in the US. Charting at #1 on iTunes US for the dance album category, and #2 on iTunes Canada for largest selling album overall, this release has sold well over 15,000 in the first 2 weeks. The meteoric success of 'Elements of Life' is a first for Tiësto's career, and the album has become one of the largest in 2007 for dance music!!

"It seems there's already a show with that name and this person was threatening to sue me."

Tiësto's Elements of Life Performance in Hasselt Huge Success
Tiësto's performance at the Ethias Arena, last Saturday the 19th of May, rocked the city of Hasselt, Belgium. More than 18,000 fans including the complete Belgian media and press witnessed the biggest Elements of Life show set-up so far, full of spectacular special effects, during this Belgian part of the Elements of Life tour.

With the tour, that not only takes Tiësto through Europe but all over the world as well, 35 crew members and three trailers with state of the art equipment deliver a tremendous event. During the Hasselt show, two midi-driven water shows were deployed for the first time, running in full sync with the live set of the DJ in combination with a 60 by 15 meter HD screen, which resulted in an impressive light show.

Tiësto's sparkling live set had a few highly entertaining exchanges with live performances from artists like Jes, Julie Thompson, BT and of course Christian Burns, who entertained the audience with the hit 'In The Dark'.

One of the highlights of the evening was the unique collaboration with The Blue Man Group, the world famous blue headed trio, that recently recorded a brand new track with Tiësto called 'No More Heroes'.

The Elements of Life show in Hasselt, perfectly finished with an eye for the tiniest detail, has shown what Tiësto's fans can count on: a grand event of such a scale and quality, that it hasn't found its equal in the industry yet.

It's got a beat you can dance to
So many acts. So little time. Well, you actually had all day Saturday at Coachella to sample a tantalizingly wild variety of music. Yet it could be frustrating to decide between Kings of Leon and the Decemberists, Travis and MSTRKRFT, or the Good, the Bad & the Queen and the Black Keys, to name just a few of the dilemmas.

On the other hand, the fest was a channel changer's dream. With careful calculation (and hardy feet), you could sample almost everything, as though spinning the dial on the coolest, most contemporary fantasy radio station. Tune in to L.A.'s Ozomatli in the Mojave Tent, where its funk-rap-Latin songs energized fans, and then backtrack to the Outdoor Theater for the atmospheric Blonde Redhead's blending of wispy vocals, noisy guitars and fetching melodies. Take in MSTRKRFT's popular, pulsating dance music, and then amble off to hear Travis' gently epic arena pop.

Earlier on the main stage, anti-folk artist Regina Spektor proved surprisingly hard to walk away from, playing keyboards and percussion and inadvertently engaging in a piano duel with Jack's Mannequin, next door at the Outdoor Theater.

In the relatively intimate Gobi Tent, New York sister act CocoRosie fused trip-hop, rap, Björkishness and nigh-on-terminal cutesiness.

Even at the end Saturday, the choices were tough. But trance DJ Tiësto dominated from his main-stage position. All hands were in the air as he put his own stamp on Imogen Heap's 'Hide and Seek' and Moby's 'We Are All Made of Stars.'

On Friday, in the completely overwhelmed Gobi Tent, British soul singer Amy Winehouse and her band did a remarkable job of rendering her intimate and raw blend of R&B, Motown and reggae as though playing in a medium-sized nightclub.

In the same tent earlier, folk duo Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, in their matching sequined red and white Nudie-style cowboy suits, harmonized high-lonesome sweetly, momentarily transporting the ardent crowd away from the palm-tree-ringed fields with Johnny Cash and June Carter's 'Jackson' and the pensive 'Elvis Presley Blues.'

If you didn't want to think about the night Elvis died, you could go bounce with the members of Dance Nation in the Sahara Tent, where French DJ Dave Guetta gleefully demonstrated the tribal effect of the beat on your feet.

Later on, with the U.K. hip-hop-dance fusion of double-drummer-fueled Faithless, the beat even gained political depth.

Everyone into the tent, indeed.

Greetings From The Elements of Life World Tour
Hi everybody!

I just finished my little holiday in Ibiza between the gigs. I love this island! I've been coming here for years and it's never boring. I was a bit disappointed that they closed Amnesia and a few other clubs but everybody was very positive that they will be open soon again.

I am really happy with the way things are going now on the 'Elements Of Life' World Tour. In the beginning of this year I felt a lot of pressure because it's not easy to roll out a tour like this worldwide. My whole team was under pressure and the first couple of shows we had to get used to each other because it was new for everybody. And a last minute cancellation of shows doesn't help either! But now, after a couple of months on the road I can say I am really proud of everyone who works with me on this tour:

Jes is doing a great performance every time again and again. This girl has so much energy, she is amazing! I am working on a new song with her at this moment. Julie Thompson is a great performer as well. I love her voice and she sings two songs on the show now. We finished a new song called 'Somewhere Inside' and it's going down well. I will probably put it on my next mix compilation. Christian Burns is also doing an excellent job!! When you close your eyes while he sings, you hardly hear the difference between the track on my album and his live performance.

Then we have the work 'behind the scenes', which is just as important, and there the people also do an amazing job! The crew that builds the stage and takes care of the overall production doesn't get much sleep during the few days before the show. And don't forget the problems we have sometimes with the special effects like laser or fire. In some countries we don't get the permission to use them! Also the other important details that have to be arranged like food, hotels, flights... Lots of small things go wrong sometimes, but they don't complain. I am really proud of this team. Everybody is giving a hundred percent of effort!

A special night for me was the return to the Gelredome stadium in Holland, since that's where the whole idea of this world tour started! It has been my favourite night so far this year and the crowd was superb. I think it was even better then the show in 2004. So thanks to everybody who came to the shows so far and I hope to see you soon!!!

Tiësto Notches Another Dance Music First for North America With 15,000 in Attendance for Los Angeles “Tiësto in Concert” Solo Performance.
Tiësto places another first on the shelf, as the first DJ in N. America to perform a solo event for 15,000 people, selling out the LA Sports Arena last Saturday, August 11th. The LA show was one of the only three 'Tiësto In Concert' shows being produced for the North American leg of the Elements of Life tour, and all three have reached capacity, if not selling out in advance. 'Tiësto In Concert' events are solo shows, with Tiësto performing from the beginning to the end.

Complete with some of the most cutting edge and innovative technology available, the concert is complete with cinematic visuals filmed specifically for the Elements of Life tour, in addition to production aspects that include pyrotechnics and other outstanding visual accompaniments. To date, the Elements of Life tour has sold out each show in N. America, and with more dates to continue through October, the potential to break additional records remains.

The ISOS 6 tracklist

Hi everybody,

as you all know from the announcement two weeks ago, my new mixcompilation In Search Of Sunrise 6 will soon be released. I am very proud to present the CD to you all. I went to Ibiza last June for inspiration after two years of absence and I have to say that the island is still very magical to me. There are so many beautiful, secret spots to discover and the parties at the clubs are still crazy and energetic. So to make sure that I would capture the love and dedication I feel for the island, I just had to go back for the proper inspiration. It's with modesty that I can tell you that now I know for sure that 'ISOS 6' earned it to be called 'Ibiza'!

I mixed the album a couple of weeks ago in the old-fashioned way, which means that I didn't use any programs or computerized gadgets for it. I worked with CD-players for the mix. Most of the tracks are so exclusive that, if I'd still be mixing with records, I wouldn't have been able to get those productions on vinyl!

Let me take you through the tracks;

ISOS 6 - CD 01

01. Es Vedrá - Hacienda
This is a real Balearic intro to put you in the Ibiza mood.

02. Glenn Morrison – Contact
I played this track at the Gelredome during my Tiësto in concert gig and people loved it. I wanted to put this one on this CD as a great memory of that night.

3. Andy Duguid featuring Leah - Don't Belong
A new talent from England from who we will hear a lot more in the future.

4. Solaris Heights – Vice (Sydenham Dub)
Very warm and soulful track that fits very well on the album.

5. Global Experience – Madras
Great producer from Germany who delivers the ultimate Ibiza feeling with this track.

6. Leonid Rudenko - Summerfish (Scandall Sunset On Ibiza Mix)
The title says it all. Such a warm but still energetic track; it makes me happy when I listen to this one.

7. Clear View featuring Jessica - Tell Me
Nice, mysterious house track with sexy vocals.

8. The Veil Kings - Searching For Truth
A beautiful, happy Balearic guitar track.

9. Ohmna - The Sun'll Shine (Sunrise Mix)
Amazing track I received of one of the house godfathers Johan Groenewegen. This DJ/producer gives me only a couple of tracks a year but they are always special and he delivers high quality.

10. Moonbeam - See The Difference Inside (Inside Mix)
Very original vocals and production from Russia.

11. Allure featuring Julie Thompson - Somewhere Inside Of Me
A track we did with Julie Thompson. She does a live performance of the song in our Elements Of Life tour around the globe and it's going down very well!

12. Taxigirl - High Glow
A sparkling track with a beautiful vocal.

13. Reeves featuring Alanah - Lonely
Very warm and emotional production. I get goosebumps whenever I hear it.

14. Imogen Heap - Hide & Seek (Tiësto's In Search Of Sunrise Remix)
This song won't be released on any other CD ever. We made it especially for this volume of In Search Of Sunrise and it's a perfect track to end the first disc of the mix.

ISOS 6 – CD 02

1. Steve Forte Rio - A New Dawn
A special melody to open a set with, very original.

2. Nic Chagall - What You Need (NC's In Love With Prog Mix)
There are two great mixes of this track but this one is my favorite for the CD.
In a big room or arena I would play the harder mix.

3. Marc Marzenit - Trozitos De Navidad (Primavera Remix)
A typical Tiësto track with great string pads.

4. John Dahlbäck - Don't Speak
A special and mysterious track with a unique and moody sound.

5. Deadmau5 - Arguru
A producer and fresh talent from Canada, we will hear a lot from this guy in the following years.

6. First State featuring Anita Kelsey - Falling
Big tune on the dancefloor. House beats with trance, a perfect combination!

7. Jonas Steur featuring Jennifer Rene - Fall To Pieces
Very nice production of Jonas, it's a big hit at the moment.

8. JES - Imagination (Tiësto Remix)
My remix of one of my favorite singers. Fits perfectly on the album.

9. Tom Cloud - Mercury Room
I am getting a little more trancy and deeper at the end of this CD, starting with this track.

10. Marcus Schössow - Chase My Rabbit
Great track which has everything: it's energetic, melodic and original.

11. Maor Levi - Reflect
A warm track with great vocals. It's been around for a while but definitely worth it to be on ISOS 06.

12. Progression - Different Day, Different Light
The best track of their debut album.

13. Jedidja - Dancing Water
We made this track especially for the water piece in our Elements Of Life show. You can hear the old skool Tiësto trance sound in this track.

14. D'Alt Vila - Breathing
A perfect, beautiful melody to end the compilation with.

When I finally listened to the whole CD, both part one and two in one take, I felt I was in a different zone! I hope you'll feel the same and that you will enjoy this mix.

I gave it my best,

Tiësto

Dutch DJ Tiësto slowly builds U.S. following
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Tiësto, the world's pre-eminent DJ, performed for a worldwide audience of billions during the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He played in front of 200,000 fans at Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro in January, and closed the second night of southern California's Coachella festival in May, following Red Hot Chili Peppers on the main stage.

On August 11, the Dutch DJ performed a 5 1/2-hour set in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 15,000 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. It was the largest-ever single-DJ show in North American history, featuring full-production and arena-scale theatrics the likes of which the dance community has never seen.

While the DJ culture in America is firmly entrenched in the underground, Tiësto is capitalizing on his worldwide stature to not only bubble into the American mainstream but create an American mainstream. As major labels renew their interest in acts influenced by electronic and dance music and the DJ culture becomes more prominent among the jet set, dance music is poised to break through in America as it has around the world. Tiësto recently talked about not only his music but the emerging scene he exists within.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: YOU ARE THE BIGGEST DJ IN THE WORLD IN TERMS OF AUDIENCE AND COMMERCIAL EXPOSURE. DOES YOUR SUCCESS WORLDWIDE MAKE IT EASIER TO FOCUS ON AMERICA, WHERE DJS STILL OCCUPY AN UNDERGROUND SCENE?

Tiësto: I think it helps, yes, but I never looked at America as one of my targets. I look at America as my little playground. What I like about America is that I can be famous when I go into a club, but I can walk here on Sunset (Boulevard in Los Angeles) and nobody knows who I am. I'd like to get bigger, of course, and make more people aware, but this is a very difficult place to achieve that.

THR: DO YOU THINK THE REPUTATIONS AND PERCEPTIONS OF THE DJ AND DANCE SCENES CONTRIBUTE TO THAT?

Tiësto: Yes, I think that there is a lot of damage to the scene from back in the day.

THR: HOW DO YOU HOPE TO CHANGE THAT?

Tiësto: We need to get people to the shows . . . my shows. I am the living proof that dance music has evolved, and that it's not just about drugs anymore. People are really into the music. Look at the people on the Internet; look at my MySpace page, I have numbers that are better than the most 'credible' artists. I think we need to draw more people to the shows because that's how it will grow. I've noticed that there are more people coming out, too -- people are curious.

THR: DESCRIBE THE IMPACT COACHELLA HAD FOR YOU THIS YEAR, CLOSING THE MAIN STAGE AFTER THE CHILI PEPPERS.

Tiësto: It was big. Not only did people stay after the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but they enjoyed themselves, and many of those people didn't know who I was. Even the owner of Coachella was impressed that there were like 75,000 people in the open field. But we're not there yet. A lot of the big-time reporters didn't even give it the chance. 'Oh, the Chili Peppers are finished, we can go home now.' But the people who stayed and saw the show, they were impressed. The buzz after the show was amazing, and now we're doing more festivals, as well, like Voodoo (Music Experience, October 27 in New Orleans). Coachella even wants me again.

THR: MANY OF THE WORLD'S BIGGEST DJS DON'T MAKE AN EFFORT TO TOUR AMERICA. IS IT BECAUSE THEY'RE TREATED LIKE SUPERSTARS OVERSEAS AND DON'T GET THE SAME NOTORIETY HERE?

Tiësto: I think it's really got to do with their own attitudes. In the beginning, the first time I came to America, I played for 400 people and got $500. But I loved it, and the crowd was inspiring because it's not as developed as it is in Europe. It was refreshing to have the superstar status over there, then come here and play for less people in smaller clubs. That was in 2000. I started in 1998, and it was in 2002 that I got big in Europe... I've still got a couple years left. (Laughs.) You can definitely feel it growing here.

THR: WITHOUT THE COMMERCIAL FOUNDATION AND INDUSTRY SUPPORT IN AMERICA, HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT DEVELOPING AS AN ARTIST?

Tiësto: I think I'm just very lucky to have the Internet. American culture is dominated by a small group of people that decide everything; the same people own all the radio stations, the magazines and the record companies, so they decide what people are going to like. But I think that's changing now -- rapidly. Young bands are popping up because of places like MySpace, and music is less controllable now.

THR: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A DJ?

Tiësto: I was really a music lover. My first music love was heavy metal -- Metallica, and I'm a big Iron Maiden fan. I made rock tapes in the beginning, then later on I made dance tapes. I would mix sounds and cut them up on tape decks. I would take tracks from Iron Maiden and make it like I was at their live concerts, with the audience, leads and the reverb, and I'd play them for my brother and tell him that I had exclusive Iron Maiden concerts. That's how I started! (Laughs.) But I like all music -- if somebody is good, they're good. Like the 'Lovestoned' (Justin Timberlake) song that I just remixed, that's just a really good song.

THR: MASH-UPS AND REMIXES ARE THE RAGE TODAY, ESPECIALLY IN CELEBRITY PARTY CIRCLES. DOES THE MEDIA FOCUS ON THE DIFFERENT STYLES OF DJS WHO AREN'T TRANCE HELP OR HURT YOUR SCENE?

Tiësto: At the moment, I think everything helps, because there's nothing. I was at Area, a club here in L.A., and they played like four or five dance songs -- at least that's something. I feel like it's getting there. In Europe, hip-hop is getting stronger because we never had that culture, but it's been here since the '90s, the '80s even. People are more tired of it here, I think, and dance is becoming more popular. It attracts nice crowds, beautiful women, models... You see it in Vegas, dance is getting big. The crowds are changing because the people are. You have so many immigrants from Latin America and Europe, and they grew up with dance music, so that helps as well. They draw each other in.

THR: YOUR FULL PRODUCTION IS VERY AMBITIOUS, AND WHERE YOU CAN PERFORM LATE ENOUGH, YOUR SETS ARE MORE THAN FIVE HOURS LONG. THAT'S QUITE THE UNDERTAKING.

Tiësto: Well, that's why I did it -- because it was difficult to do! (Laughs.) I used to play two-hour sets, and then the commercial, mainstream crowds who listened to the radio and stuff, they weren't happy because I only played four or five of my own tunes, and the core fans weren't happy, either, because they don't want to hear those tracks anymore. They want to hear new stuff and deeper stuff... I'm caught between being a DJ and an artist, so the first 2 1/2 hours I present the new album ('Elements of Life' on Ultra Records), you have the four elements that are the theme of the tour, then I have the one hour that I call the power mix: all the biggest Tiësto tunes and everything is synched -- the visuals, lights, effects, pyrotechnics, everything. The last portion is Tiësto the DJ, an old-school-type set with trance records and big dance anthems.

THR: IN TRYING TO JUGGLE THE MAINSTREAM CROWDS WITH MORE UNDERGROUND FANS, DO YOU WORRY ABOUT ALIENATING PEOPLE?

Tiësto: That is a good question. It's really hard to say because of course you want the credibility from everybody, but you can't make everybody happy. I think I always stayed loyal to my true fans. I was playing techno music not really to be mainstream, but it became mainstream. That's why I'm so convinced that if people come to this show and give it a chance, they'll see that it's not a rave, and that dance has evolved and that it is a very professional performance.

THR: DO YOU FEEL OPTIMISTIC THAT THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A SCENE TO EMERGE IN AMERICA?

Tiësto: Yes. I think dance music has got to blow up here; it's just a matter of time. It needs to professionalize a lot more, and that's the thing that hasn't happened yet. We started with nothing in the '90s, and the new people coming up now, even the DJs, are evolving. The responses to the shows in America have been phenomenal, and I think I'll come back next year and do a proper tour everywhere, with the full production. If I can take it to the level I'm thinking of, then I definitely think it will blow up.

Personal Wishes
Hello Everybody!

I want to write you all a personal message to thank you for making 2008 such an amazing year for me.

I feel like this was one of the best years of my career, playing for more people than ever, with the most energetic crowds. The 'In Search of Sunrise' tour brought me over to so many different parts of the globe... Asia, Australia, Latin America, North America and Europe. Each time it was an inspiration to play for you. I really feel blessed.

Tiësto’s Epic Summer Will End With the Release of his New Album!
Tiësto has just told the LA Times that his anxiously-awaited new album is slated to come out this September! In an article that appeared last Friday, Tiësto told a Times reporter that, not only should the album drop that month but that LA itself was a major influence on this record's sound. He said, 'The six weeks I spent in Los Angeles last October and November were probably the biggest inspiration I had in making this new album. I was going out a lot, listening to music, hearing bands play. It pointed me in a new direction.'

It's going be a big summer for Tiësto and the fans. Tiësto will be back in California in May, playing his first ever show in Sacramento. He's also celebrating Memorial Day in Las Vegas with back-to-back nights at JET and The Bank, the party city's two hottest nightclubs.

As the summer kicks off, starting in June, Tiësto will begin his 16-week Monday night residency at Privilege in Ibiza. With up to 8,000 fans a night in the world's biggest nightclub, these exclusive shows will feature a spectacular multi-million-Euro stage and sound production. Topping Australia's charts, Sneaky Sound System has worked with such legends as Kanye West, Empire of the Sun, and Stuart Price. Meanwhile, Calvin Harris's latest single 'I'm Not Alone,' which has been remixed by Tiësto, has been #1 in the UK for two weeks. This event is guaranteed to be an amazing day and night of epic dance music.
