♦ TEN WALLS live (Innervisions, Life and Death, LT)
Ten Walls arrived onto the musical landscape in spring 2013 with a hint of mystery and one groundbreaking e.p. on berlin’s flawless innervisions label. Title track ‘gotham’ went on to conquer main rooms and festival stages worldwide, and during the summer of 2013 achieved underground anthem status.
Uniquely for any artist, the follow up releases have competed for the same accolade: potential tracks of the year. ‘requiem’ released on Italy’s respected Life&Death imprint hit the coveted Beatport number one spot and has dominated club soundtracks for many months. Walking with elephants, the third and most recent ep is a record, once heard, never forgotten. It only crystalizes Ten Walls ability to take the most unusual of sounds and produce a sonic work of art.
To speak about ten walls as the sum of only three records would also be unjust. Each of the eight tracks featuring across the three ep’s have been unique, garnering fans and plaudits from all corners of the electronic sound scape.
With experimentation and artistic interpretation at the core of the Ten Walls project, the evolving live performance is every bit as creative and intricate as the productions. A live visual AV-show alongside brand new Ten Walls material manipulated and performed live, aims to push creative boundaries, both sonically and visually at venues and festivals worldwide throughout 2014.
♦ ÂME (Innervisions, Sonar Kollektiv, DE)
After a long night of dancing, many night club patrons leave the venue with a certain track stuck in their heads. But for Âme, the DJ/production duo of Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann, the tunes lodged in their brains are the ones they didn't hear, ones not yet written that would fit perfectly in their sets. Since 2003, Beyer and Wiedemann have penned songs that once existed just outside club- goers' imagination, songs that boldly combined floor-filling elements with conceptual conceits while maintaining their visceral appeal. As part of Innervisions, the collective/label they run with Dixon, Âme (pronounced "AHM") offer glimpses of the future of electronic music through their live project, genre-melding compilations, and an independently run shop that completes the connection between artist and admirer. In a genre obsessed with reliving the past, Ame are focused on what's still to come.
Âme 's ability to fuse together seemingly disparate influences is greatly informed by their talents as DJs. Not given to fulfilling trends, their sets draw upon the whole of dance music's history and keep them in great demand around the world. Their regular nights at such establishments as Robert Johnson (Frankfurt), Fabric (London), Trouw (Amsterdam), Lux (Lisbon), and Air (Tokyo) are exceeded only by their marathon sets during Innervisions nights at their beloved Panorama Bar (Berlin). Those awaiting the opportunity to experience an A?me DJ or live set have been well cared for as well, as the pair have captured their curating skills on mix CDs for Sonar Kollektiv, NRK Sound Division and Fabric, as well as the landmark survey of historical minimalism, The Grandfather Paradox compilation done in collaboration with Dixon and Schwarz. Ame are set to follow this achievement with a periodspanning mix all their own, Primary Structures.
♦ ONUR ÖZER (Cocoon Recordings, TR)
Istanbul, Turkey, native Onur Özer, a techno DJ and producer, was a major contributor to the Berlin-based Vakant label's early success. He turned in intricate but not overly fussy tracks like "Twilight," balancing dancefloor functionality with an intense detail to sound design that rewarded the mind and feet with repeated plays. Partnered with labelmate Mathias Kaden, Özer mixed Momentum (2006), a summary of Vakant's stunning initial run of releases; the following year, he released the label's first single-artist full-length with Kasmir. Watergate 01, a solo mix album for Berlin's Watergate club, was issued in 2008.
♦ BINH (Concrete Music, DE)
In a relatively short time, the name Binh has become almost synonymous with the sounds of modern underground Berlin. But it was the training the Düsseldorf native received throughout the country that allowed him to hone tastes and skills before arriving in the capital to claim a stake in its bustling music scene.
The years leading up to 2007 were characterized by a series of breakthroughs and successful residencies at parties like the popular Heimatmelodie at Hotel Shanghai in Essen, as well as at Neuss’ Tribehouse, where he surprised and pleased on a regular basis. He would soon become a recurring name in Ratinger’s Blauer See Festival, playing there three years in a row (2008 to 2010) and well after moving away from Düsseldorf.
And then came Berlin, where Binh was able to quickly stand out from among the masses. All this thanks to an extremely particular taste in music and sets overflowing with deep house and techno of the most refined variety, defined by subtlety and sprinkled with the delightfully unexpected. He began his residency at the iconic Club der Visionaere in 2007 and has been wooing the crowds ever since at his bi-monthly event, Noon, alongside many a well-known artist of his choosing.
2011 saw his first performances at legendary venues such as Panorama and Paris’ Rex club, as well as the popular Concrete in the French capital and various gigs in Ibiza, including the Next Wave parties. The following year was also one of growth, with sessions all around Europe, including Amsterdam’s ADE festival and Techno Gipsy in Moscow. And 2013 holds nothing but promise, with another pivotal moment in Binh’s career – his first release on the new Concrete Music imprint with his track H. ufer: a sharp, solid piece of work and a product of obvious perfectionism, described by many as a high point in the three-part various artists release.
One would be hard-pressed to find an artist with as elegant a taste and as solid a work ethic as Binh, and it is indeed a victory for the music scene when hard work and a loyalty to one’s own style are rewarded with the popularity this artist gains more and more each day.
