Biografie
The first line-up consisted of Dan Bălan and Petru Jelihovschi. In 1998, a casting was held in Chișinău to form a Moldovan boy band.
After first performances in their Moldovan homeland, the Romanian record label Cat Music became aware of the three friends in 2002. They received a record deal and in the summer of 2002 their first single Numai Tu was released. The song became a high-flyer and immediately reached number 1 in the Romanian charts. With their second single Despre Tine, O-Zone repeated this success and the album Number 1, released in 2002, also sold well.
In the summer of 2003, the band's second album, DiscO-Zone, was released. It became the best-selling dance album of the year in Romania. First single from the album was Dragostea din tei, initially a hit only in Romania.
In February 2004, Italian producers became aware of the song and produced a cover version of Dragostea din tei with Romanian-born singer Haiducii without O-Zone's consent. This recording stormed the Italian charts and was #1 on the dance charts for six weeks alone. As a penalty for the unauthorized cover, Haiducii had to pay the equivalent of 10,000 euros.
As a result, the Italian record company Time Records contacted O-Zone, gave them a one-year record deal and released their original version in several European countries. After peaking in Spain, Italy, France, Belgium and the Czech Republic, O-Zone reached the top of the German single charts on June 7, 2004. Dragostea din tei remained there for 14 weeks, making it the biggest number one hit of 2004, and on June 20, 2004, the song also reached number one in Austria (13 weeks) and Switzerland (14 weeks).
In addition, the song helped Gary Brolsma to worldwide fame overnight as the soundtrack to his playback video published on YouTube ("the Numa Numa Guy"). His contribution triggered a veritable flood of imitators and made the playback video genre a major trend in the early years of the web video platform.
For Dragostea din tei, the three Moldovans were awarded the Echo for the best rock/pop single in April 2005. Soon after, the band broke up and the members started solo careers.
On May 9, 2017, the group had a reunion. They played 2 concerts on the occasion of Europe Day in Chișinău and in Bucharest. After that, the 3 members did not rule out continuing to release music together under the project O-Zone in the future.
