In light of this year's Amsterdam Dance Event, a double bill screening of two documentaries that underscore the essence of what binds this, but foremost, any annual music festival: dancing!! Featuring 2019's IDFA documentary Lil' Buck: Real Swan, and on 35mm: David LaChappele's RIZE.
RIZE (2005) is introduced by a dance performance in the theater. Taking inspiration from the two movies, Babet Fernandez (Meervaart Studio) has put together a choreography which revolves around diversity, femininity and will express the diverse grounds of hiphop.

🦢 19:30 Lil' Buck: Real Swan (2019)
As a boy he practiced his pointes (in sneakers) until his feet bled. His version of The Dying Swan, combined classical ballet with jookin' (a dance of deceptive light-footedness with bounces, slides and toe-turns) and has had millions of views on YouTube. Now he works with Madonna and Yo-Yo Ma.
We are lead to his hometown of Memphis and other places from his youth, such as the parking lots where he and his friends used to dance, his ballet school, and his mother’s home, in addition to the many dance scenes against the backdrop of deserted sidewalks and alleyway.

🤡 21:30 RIZE (2005, 35mm)
In his debut film, fashion photographer and music video director David LaChapelle introduces us to the phenomenon of krumping and its face painted sister, clowning: both hyper-energetic dance forms in which hip-hop dancing meet with warmongering tribal dances. A style in which aggression and control merge with movements that are a direct reaction to the violence in the environment. As such, we follow either krumpers and clowners, to whom their way of dancing offers not only an outlet, but as well an alternative to a life full of gangs, drugs and murders.
— 84 min | 35mm | English with Dutch subtitles

Per film €8,50 | stadspas (green): €5,- | Cineville: free
