Biografie
Hailed by media as one of the top rising talents to emerge from Asia, Olivia Dawn is perhaps best known for delivering spectacular violin solos and haunting vocals over her live DJ sets. A skilled DJ in her own right, Olivia's dreamy yet groovy and flowing musical style carries influences from house, disco, techno and world music. However, the true art of her performance lies not simply in her unique selection, but also in her ability to turn even the most obscure underground tracks into instantly accessible dancefloor hits by adding her own unique live elements to it. By mixing in fresh, eclectic music with tasteful reworks of old hidden gems, Olivia is able to take her audiences on an emotionally uplifting and unforgettable journey.
Growing up in Hong Kong, Olivia started learning the violin and piano at the age of six. She left her hometown at fourteen to study high school in the U.S., where she honed her songwriting skills and fell in love with music. After having graduated with a classical violin degree from The Juilliard School in New York, Olivia moved to Valencia, Spain, where she began to experiment with jazz at Berklee College of Music and discovered electronic music. During her short two-year stint back in Hong Kong after her studies (where she worked at a hotel), Olivia cut her teeth playing extensively around Asia where she warmed up for international DJs including Yokoo, Rampue, Jeremy Olander, Agents of Time, Aeroplane, Jasper James & Dave Seaman, Paul Oakenfold, Jonas Blue and Bebe Rexha. Her sets stood out not only for her refusal to be boxed into one single genre, but also because Olivia improvises effortlessly on her violin in styles ranging from classical to arabic to jazz and sings her originals live. Olivia composes all her own music at home in her small bedroom studio with a piano, a synthesizer, a drum machine and her microphone on Ableton Live. She enjoys using a mixture of analog and digital gear, as well as combining live instruments with recorded samples.
Having gained respect in both the jazz and classical realm and been highly sought after as a songwriter (previously for PeerMusic Spain) and session player in the studio, She has recorded vocals for TIME (Sapiens/FR) and strings for Eagles & Butterflies, Casey Driessen (Bela Fleck & the Flecktones) and Latin Grammy award-winning producer Javier Limón. Her latest release BIRD (in collaboration with TIME & Kiko Franco) was listed on Spotify Brasil's Top 50 viral chart for a week.
In just two years since she picked up electronic music, Olivia went from playing in her bedroom to playing at Tomorrowland for two years in a row with her duo "Until Dawn", and will be making her solo debut at ADE in Amsterdam along with an Australian debut at Babylon Festival in the coming months. An advocate of sustainability, equality and mental health, Olivia occasionally gives TEDx talks and performance lectures at Berklee College of Music and serves as a Global Shaper of the World Economic Forum. Recently she hosted a bilingual live webcast following the International Music Competition Harbin on behalf of Medici TV, the largest classical music channel in the world. She is also in the process of training for marathons around the world as part of Nike Run Club.
Olivia strongly believes that music has the power of healing, and makes it her mission to spread joy and unite people from all walks of life through her shows. Her inspiring story and music have been featured on media outlets such as TimeOut magazine, Prestige magazine, Jessica magazine, South China Morning Post, RTHK radio 2 & 4, HardRock FM and more. Currently based in London after having lived in New York, Spain and Hong Kong, she is currently focused on writing and producing her debut EP to be released sometime in the next year.
