Biografie
A vanguard in his own right, Rob Garza has consistently pushed conceptual frontiers, succeeding in an intercontinental legion of musical prowess and accomplishing a covetable sonic narrative.
The San Francisco-based producer and co-founder of Thievery Corporation, known for their holistic performances and electronic-infused modifications of dub, trip hop, reggae, and bossa nova, has maintained a prolific career owing to his ever-evolving taste and diverse influences based off the cultures and styles encountered during his travels. Constantly inspired by his surroundings and experiences, Garza's artistic foresight has always supported a fundamental motif of connecting people through music; such motivations have led him to opening for Paul McCartney with Thievery Corporation, DJing in Nepal for climbers tackling Mt. Everest, to performing in the most obscure clubs in remote corners of the world.
It was at the age of 14 that Garza uprooted his formative years from rural Maryland and moved with his family to Windsor, Connecticut. What simply started as an elective music class in high school, Garza quickly found a creative outlet and an escape through his introduction to the early developments of synthesizers, sequencers, samplers, and drum machines, setting him on a path to creating music electronically. "I love music in general," Garza explains, "and whether it was creating music through electronic instruments or more traditional sounding things, it's all just colors that are a part of a palette allowing you to create and express yourself." While those early days were instigated by a worldly curiosity and a passion for music, he never held any inclination it would lead to a full-blown career.
As a solo artist, Rob Garza infuses his own adept house and nu-disco artistry into every one of his productions, boasting a specific style that is perceptive, powerful and globally-stimulated. After moving to San Francisco in 2009, the producer was enlivened by his time traveling with Thievery Corporation and unearthed a new focus on his DJ sets and music.
"When I first came to San Francisco, I returned to my electronic roots in the dance community while also spending a great amount of time in Mexico, where there is a great dance music scene" says Garza. "There's so much going on in terms of people taking influences from all these different genres—like house and dub and new wave and disco—and putting it all together in a way that's very new and original and inspiring to my own music."
Garza eventually formed and piloted Magnetic Moon Records in 2015, with a mission to showcase similar artists from around the world, releasing an exotic combination of global, deep, and groovy records.
His debut EP, Palace of Mirrors, released in March 2015 on his own label, further embodied these lush and languid soundscapes that are both organically-enriched and deeply socialized by his extensive excursions. Adding to his budding repertoire, Garza's remix catalogue also includes a string of first-rate reworks for artists like ODESZA, Tycho, Gogol Bordello, Afrolicious, and Federico Aubelle, a number of which can be found on his 2013 "Remixes" album.
Elementally defined by his unique perspective, Rob Garza's work is a glowing attraction to the relationship between human emotion and musical expression. As 2018 dawns, Garza is fixed on eclipsing his career to satisfy a broader artistic vision with his hotly-anticipated sophomore EP.
"The inspiration for this EP is born of travel," Garza explains. "A lot of the music materialized while I was in motion from one city to another. Most of the songs were written on trains, planes or hotel rooms while touring through Europe, each of which conjures up sounds that are percussive, deep and seductive. "Dubroja" invokes otherworldly Bulgarian chants merged with modern underpinnings. "Velvet Coffin" journeys through a dark subterranean underworld. "Dissolve" features the brilliant vocals of Fare, creating a mesmerizing dreamlike and haunting vibe."
With all that said, Rob Garza's sonorous and multi-faceted output continually strengthens the backbone of his experiential pedigree - a distinctive merit that remains uniquely unmatched.
